What purpose does a washer and dryer really serve us? They wash and dry our clothes, sure, that’s pretty self-evident. But there’s much more to it than that. Like all our modern day appliances, many washers and dryers have modern day features to consider, and some of these features are designed to save you money in the long run.
This seems obvious, but a lot of people think that they can skip leveling the concrete once it’s down. Don’t fall into that trap. If you’re pouring something flat like a sidewalk or a driveway, use a 2×4 board slightly longer than the wood frame you poured your concrete into. Then, just drag it toward the end of the pour in a sawing motion. You’ll end up with an odd texture, but you will take care of that soon.
Once you’ve done this, take a bull float and draw it perpendicular to the direction you worked with the board. In other words, if you were pouring a sidewalk and drew your board from the right to the left with a sawing motion, you’ll want to start in the same place and draw the bull float toward and away from yourself, lifting the leading edge slightly. This will force the heavy stuff lower and let the lighter stuff rise.
How to Calculate Your Budget
The loud clanking and shaking washers from the past are gone; now they can operate with a whisper. Consumer Reports rates new washers and dryers on noise and vibration. If your laundry room is near the bedroom you might want to get the quietest model you can find, or if it’s upstairs you’ll need one that doesn’t shake so much.
Run along the edge of the concrete with an edging tool so your concrete will have nice, rounded edges. You can then smooth it out with your magnesium float until it’s the way you want it. Be patient with this process, and go slowly along the edge in a back and forth sawing motion. Cutting control joints is one of the most important things you can do. Run along the entire project and cut one about every five to six feet, using a board or other tool as a straightedge.
Space savers If you’re laundry room is tiny, or even if it’s a closet, you can save space by purchasing a stackable washer and dryer. This also makes it easier to transfer your wet clothes to the dryer. The US department of Energy has made it easy to detect the most efficient models. They slap a sticker right on it.
As a last step, cover the concrete with plastic sheeting so it will harden and strengthen as it dries. You don’t absolutely need to do this, but in order to have the best concrete work, you should. When all is said and done, doing your own concrete work is possible, but getting a general contractor in Blackfoot, Idaho might be worth your while.
